welcome

This is an old revision of the document!

Welcome

Welcome to our community. We've put some notes together here of where to find club resources, information and how to get the most out of your membership of the club.

Matrix Chat (aka Element)

Matrix is an open source, encrypted alternative to propriety chat networks like Discord.

We use Matrix to keep members up to date on what’s happening in the club - everything from last minute events like “Who wants to play board games tomorrow night?” to events we don’t advertise anywhere else (like a whisky tasting or poker game).

It’s also the best place to point out anything that might need repaired or get answers to any questions.

Being part of the private chat really helps build the community - a lot of great friendships have been built there and we’ve created specific rooms for all sorts of related interests; monthly dinners, tech, gigs, poker and more.

You can join up with this invite link: https://glasgow.social/matrix (use the explore button to browse the rooms - enter glasgow.social as your homeserver if you find yourself on matrix.org or somewhere else).

If you are having any problems joining or finding the correct rooms please contact us (or ask me or anyone else in the club for help).

We also have a web interface if you don’t want to install an app on your phone: https://matrix.glasgow.social

The Wiki

This is our wiki, you can access it at https://wiki.thegamerclub.co.uk - it has pages that list all our equipment, video games, board games and more.

There is also a members area with some more information.

The Community

I’d encourage you to join the chat rooms (as well as set a profile photo) so we can all get to know and recognise each other.

We have a photos page on the wiki that lets you see a snapshot of all current members.

Running events

Any of the members are welcome to run an event - you can either advertise/manage it yourself or let us know on the chat if you want it also advertised on the website or as part of some of our meetup groups (like the Glasgow Geek Social or Open Source Glasgow).

Our shared calendar is at https://mrbs.thegamerclub.co.uk/ - you can use it to reserve individual rooms or the whole club (or get an overview of what’s upcoming).

Coming to Events

All the events on the website are open to the public. As a member, feel free to come to any and all of the events (and you are welcome to bring as many guests as you want).

Events not listed on the website but that are on the calendar (as either public or private) are generally open to members too unless there is a clear restriction (which is usually only for space reasons - i.e. too many to play a particular board game). Ideally check first on the chat room but the general rule is that you’ll be very welcome to join.

Regular events

Our monthly open day is the second Saturday of the month, from 1pm to 6pm. We encourage members to come down and play some games (both video and board games) - it’s a great opportunity to meet new members (and it lets prospective members get a feel of the place).

The last Friday every month is our geek meetup - also called ‘the big house party’. We invite a few different groups to come join us. Bring along some beer or wine, help yourself to tea and coffees, it’s a general social night, but some people might play some games too. It starts from 6pm and runs until the wee hours and is usually quite busy (50+ people).

The first Friday is our tech event, a similar social event to the house party but smaller (around 20) and with a focus on talking all things tech, runs from 6pm to late.

Every Thursday we host a poker game in the main room - you can join the #poker room on Matrix to find out more, it’s very welcoming to beginners.

Every 2nd Tuesday (check the calendar) is our board games night in the main room.

Login/passwords

You should have been issued a password when you signed up. It's the same for both the wiki and the calendar. You can reset it by entering your email address here: https://mrbs.thegamerclub.co.uk/reset_password.php

If you didn't get a password or if you need any help, contact us directly.

Future Plans

  • I’m planning on running a regular game development event as well as more tech tutorials starting in March.
  • There has been talk in the D&D room about running additional one shot afternoons/evenings in systems other than D&D 5e.
  • Python Glasgow are planning on running regular events (talks and workshops)
  • Lots more Wrestling and movie nights in the works (check the relevant Matrix rooms).

If there are any events you’d like help with organising or setting up, please give me a shout (I’m happy to purchase equipment, help run events or advertise nights on meetup etc).
